Chef Opportunity at Mr L's Restaurant & Bar

Location: 23–25 Toorak Rd, South Yarra, VIC 3141

We’re now looking for a passionate and experienced Chef to join our growing team. If you thrive in a dynamic kitchen, have strong experience behind the grill, and love crafting memorable dining experiences, we’d love to hear from you!

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Kitchen Operations & Supervision

    Oversee daily kitchen activities and ensure smooth operations during service.

    Supervise and coordinate the work of line cooks, prep cooks, and other kitchen staff.

    Maintain order, discipline, and high performance standards in the kitchen.

    Step in and take charge in the Head Chef’s absence.

  • Food Preparation & Cooking

    Prepare, cook, and plate dishes to the restaurant’s standards and recipes.

    Ensure consistency in taste, presentation, and portioning across all dishes.

    Must have solid experience behind the grill, particularly with steak preparation and cooking.

    Maintain precision and quality during high-volume service periods.

    Assist in planning and updating seasonal or special menus.

    Contribute creative ideas for new dishes, plating, and ingredient combinations.

    Adjust menus to align with food cost targets and customer preferences.

  • Cost Control & Inventory Management

    Manage inventory, including ordering, receiving, and storing ingredients.

    Minimize food waste and monitor stock rotation (FIFO – First In, First Out).

    Help maintain food cost targets and budget control.

  • Staff Training & Development

    Train and mentor junior kitchen staff in cooking techniques, safety, and hygiene.

    Foster teamwork and motivate staff during high-pressure service periods.

    Conduct performance evaluations and assist in staff scheduling.

  • Hygiene, Safety & Compliance

    Ensure kitchen cleanliness and compliance with health and safety regulations.

    Enforce proper food handling, storage, and sanitation procedures.

    Conduct regular inspections and maintain HACCP or local food safety standards.

  • Service Coordination

    Coordinate with front-of-house (FOH) staff to ensure smooth communication and timely service.

    Handle customer feedback or special dietary requests when necessary.

    Manage kitchen timing to ensure efficient service during busy periods.

    Support the Head Chef in administrative duties such as scheduling, costing, and reporting.

    Step into leadership when the Head Chef is off-duty.

What We’re Looking For
  • Qualification in Commercial Cookery (Certificate III, IV, or Diploma).
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Chef, with leadership or training experience preferred.
  • Strong technical cooking skills and proven expertise in grill and steak preparation.
  • Experience in menu development and food cost management.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of food safety and hygiene regulations.
  • Positive attitude, teamwork, and attention to detail.
