Standing Room Coffee is a Fitzroy North based cafe known for quality, consistency and a strong community feel. We also have stores based at universities; RMIT University and The University of Melbourne. We focus on fresh, seasonal produce and thoughtful menu execution — and we’re looking for a hands‑on Sous Chef who wants to grow with us.
The Role We’re searching for a skilled and reliable Sous Chef to support our Head Chef in delivering a high-quality menu, and smooth, efficient service. You’ll contribute to daily operations, prep planning, menu development and kitchen leadership. This role suits someone who thrives in a fast-paced café environment and values consistency, teamwork and a positive culture.
Key Responsibilities - Lead a section during service with confidence, speed and attention to detail
- Assist with menu planning, recipe development and seasonal updates
- Oversee daily prep, stock levels, ordering and waste management
- Train, mentor and support junior kitchen staff
- Maintain high standards of food safety, hygiene and cleanliness
- Work closely with the Head Chef and FOH team to ensure smooth service
- Uphold portioning, cost control and quality standards across all dishes
About You Essential:
- 4+ years experience in a professional kitchen
- Strong cooking skills and an eye for consistency and presentation
- Experience managing prep lists and running a section independently
- Excellent communication, leadership and teamwork
- Strong understanding of food safety and HACCP standards
- Ability to work efficiently during busy service periods
- Available for full-time hours, including weekends (no nights)
Desirable:
- Previous experience in high-quality cafés/venues
- Interest in seasonal menus and creative dish development
- Ability to support and motivate a small, close-knit team
