The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre (TAC) is seeking an experienced, creative, and culturally respectful Chef to join Palawa Kipli, our Aboriginal food enterprise. This is a key role in creating and delivering high-quality, culturally informed food that celebrates palawa ingredients across catering, cultural dining, and community events.
You will lead menu development, food preparation, and kitchen operations while supporting a positive, well-organised, and culturally safe working environment.
About the Opportunity
You will be responsible for:
Developing seasonal menus that showcase palawa and local ingredients
Preparing, cooking, and presenting dishes to a consistently high standard
Maintaining a clean, organised, and compliant kitchen, including fortnightly deep cleans
Ensuring all food is correctly labelled, stored, and rotated
Supervising, training, and supporting kitchen staff
Managing stock levels, ordering, supplier relationships, and minimising waste
Ensuring compliance with food safety, hygiene, and WHS regulations
Supporting excellent customer experiences across catering, events, and cultural dining
What You’ll Bring
Proven experience as a chef or cook in busy or catering environments
Strong cooking and menu development skills
High standards of food safety, hygiene, and kitchen organisation
Ability to lead, support, and communicate well with staff
Reliability, initiative, and the ability to work calmly under pressure
Respect for palawa culture and willingness to work in a culturally informed environment
Food Safety Supervisor certification (or willingness to obtain)
Desirable
Knowledge of native/palawa foods and seasonal cultural practices
Experience in Aboriginal or community-based kitchens
Certificate III/IV in Commercial Cookery

Salary Range $70,000 - $77,000 per annum + Salary Packaging
